Your concept of the relationship between Firefox and AVG Surf Shield is backwards. Firefox is the primary application in this situation and AVG decided to make an extension for Firefox; thus AVG is responsible for keeping their extension up to date as Mozilla releases new versions of Firefox.

The AVG anti-virus program works fine without that Surf Shield extension. And AFAIK, that Surf Shield duplicates the Safe Browsing feature that is built into Firefox
