Hi,

TL;TR. Thunderbird should not change the whole folder (e.g. Inbox) during compacting by replacing "From" with "From - Mon May 3 20:50:30 2004" and the other way round. It dramatically increases the size of incremental backups done by tools detecting only blocks of bigger files which change.

Longer version. I use Borg to backup Thunderbird profile. It supports deduplication and can incrementally backup only parts of bigger files which have changed. As I use filters to automatically move messages from Inbox to the other folders, before backup, I perform compacting of the Inbox folder to effectively remove moved messages (and those deleted manually - e.g. the biggest ones). I worked pretty fine - there were no changes detected by Borg in the old messages. Only new messages were backed up.

However, it worsen in the recent months - Borg started to detected changes also in the old messages in Inbox (after compacting performed before the every backup session). As a result, a (compressed) incremental copy takes ~1/3 of the whole Inbox (instead of some MBs). For Inbox having 5GB+, it can be a problem (e.g. when - slow - network storage is used).

I diffed the Inbox file before and after of recent compacting and Thunderbird around an upgrade to 128.x (I cannot tell exactly which minor version it was) changed the "From" line for every message from just "From" to "From - Thu Nov 14 22:32:10 2024" (a date when the compaction was performed). In older backups I see that some earlier versions of Thunderbird removed the date replacing the line with just "From".

My question. Had it been an accidental change (with removing the date) which was later reverted and there will be no more "rewriting" compacted folders? Or it's "more complicated" and people using incremental backup cannot sleep peacefully?

Marcin

P.S. Let's skip the msf files for the moment as they are much smaller.

Starting about a year or more ago, when trying to set up profiles on Thunderbird for a comcast.net email address, it would fail. The different errors generated would indicate it was a problem on the mail server, and not with thunderbird. Even comcast support couldn’t figure it out. With trial and error, I finally did. - Enter your name, address and password in the setup screens and allow it to get to the “configuration found” menu. - Select to configure manually. - Under incoming server for IMAP, Authentication Method will show 0Auth2. Change it to normal password. - For Username, it will be set to the entire email address. Remove the “@” sign and everything to the right of the “@” sign. So instead of email@domain.com it will show “email” and that’s it. - Under outgoing server for SMTP the authentication method will show 0Auth2. Change it to normal password. - If username shows the entire email address, (It shouldn’t, if you changed it for IMAP) then remove the “@” sign and everything to the right of the “@” sign. - Click the Re-Test button and it should pass. - Click the Done button and the setup should be completed with no issues. -

I had been happily using Tbird for many years. In mid February, when I tried to open my inbox, the message was "inbox in use for some other operation". If it was in use, I did not know about it. Then the message changed to "Thunderbird has crashed". I tried again many times over a few months but got the same results. I've just about been coping using webmail but with much grinding of teeth. Today when I tried again, there was no message and no inbox. I've also tried opening a 2nd Tbird account but got nowhere. Does anyone have any suggestions please? Thanks, Richard>

Ive recently started using Thunderbird and its setup with my Gmail account.

When i try and search from the search bar, on outlook i used to be able to search within the PDF document so if i had alot of invoices with the same product on it say 'TBA123' as the product code it would bring all the documents with that in the PDF, is this something that should work on Thunderbird?

Hi folks!

When I connect my Feedly RSS to Thunderbird's RSS subscription, I can't receive any new messages. In addition, I can't see the old messages in the folders. I couldn't find any way to solve this problem (for those who use Feedly).

When adding an RSS Feed, I don't get any valid URLs, I add it via Feedly "Organize Feeds ---> OPML Export ---> Download Export file" and then via Thunderbird "Feed subscripts ---> Import ---> My OPML file".

Thunderbird correctly reads all RSS feed URLs, file names, folder contents when I add this file. I save it and thinking it works and everything is fine. However, when I click "Get new Messages", no messages come through. I check the Feedly website a few minutes later to see if there are any new messages and I can see the new messages in Feedly.

In order to solve the problem and make it more understandable screenshots are below.

Thank you for your help, best!

Dear Support,

I am experiencing an issue with my PEC mailbox configured in Thunderbird. In the sender column, an incorrect email address often appears, unrelated to the actual sender of the received email. In some cases, I see the phrase "on behalf of:" followed by an email address that has no connection to the message in question.

This issue makes it difficult to correctly identify the real sender of emails. I have already checked my account configuration and updated Thunderbird to the latest version, but the problem persists.

Could you please provide guidance on how to resolve this behavior?

I am available to provide further details or screenshots of the issue if needed.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Since moving to Windows 11 and reinstalling Thunderbird, I cannot access emails by this route. I have a domain hosted by Easily and can get to my emails directly through their Control Panel, but using the same email, password, ports etc through TB it fails to find the account. I have rechecked all the settings with Easily and tried several times entering them manually in TB, with the same result. What else can I do?

Hi. I am trying to import into my new Mac an old Thunderbird profile that was created in a PC, but that I use in my previous Mac. In the past, I have dragged the old profile into the new profile folder, and then used About Profiles under Troubleshooting Information to link to that imported profile and set it as the Default. Now, I click on Create a New Profile and it won't let me link. Also, the Import tool did not work. What am I missing? Thank you!

I am watching Activity Monitor in TB after reopening, to monitor the reindex process. But it hangs every time. it goes through sent items and seems to get stuck at one point every time. See image below, it's been sat like that for an hour or more now. Any ideas? thanks (Image uploader doesn't seem to be working on this board, so here's the screenshot: https://ibb.co/8MjfKRW)

Is there any way to retrieve my actual password I typedin for an email account instead of the google "token". If not, this password may be lost forever as google will not provide reset options.

A simple yes/no will suffice, don't need an explanation, I understand that thunderbird is just using what google requires of it, but it would still be good to be able to view actual password

thanks
