when I use the PASSWORD MANAGER, TB will get mail & send, but than it wont. Removing the passwords from PM, it will ask for PW & will work for 1 or 2 times than not. Start over again. I tried to not check the PM, this seems to work, just have to give TB the password every time I open TB.

Using windows 7, avast.

gmail has made some recent changes.

If you use more than your computer to access gmail eg: a phone, then you would need to set up gmail 2 step verification and then create 'an application specific password' to use in Thunderbird.

2 step verification:

Application specific password

If you only use your computer - do not use any other device, then you need to logon to gmail webmail and enable 'Allow Less secure apps'.

Allow Less secure apps:

Please note that this is gmail saying 'less secure apps', They are not saying is is insecure, but if using a phone as well as computer then set up 2 step verification for the phone and get application specific password for use in Thunderbird.

IF you have mail accounts using SSL or STARTTLS connections with a strong password then it is still ok,

This only made it worse, had to turn off "2 step"

I think avast has some sort of password filter or vault or something. Try disabling email scanning and see if that makes a difference.

Matt, I don't think this will help, TB doesn't get the password from PASSWORD MANAGER, if I don't enable PM & enter PS when asked it will get new emails. Again this started with 3.xxx, there are 2 or 3 updates in 3.xxx, never got fixed.

you say this started with 3.xxx, there are 2 or 3 updates in 3.xxx what version of TB are you running?

Have you accessed your saved passwords and removed the stored one? Tools > Options > Security > Passwords tab

  • click on 'saved passwords'
  • click on 'show passwords'
  • select the mailbox and smtp account passwords.
  • click on 'Remove'
  • click on 'Close
  • click on OK to save changes to options.

Close TB and after waiting for background processes to complete. Restart Thunderbird. At the prompt, Enter the password and select Password Manager to remember it.

had every upgrade, problem didn't improve, current is 31.3.0. I've done the Password Manager routine many times, some pass versions would need to be reloaded to work again, at times a full reboot was necessary. Like I said, not using Password Manager most openings will ask for a password, but at times need to close & restart, or reboot.
