I started having problems when I updated to 54.0.1. Win 7 Enterprise task manager shows two (process) Firefox exe running browser running. I kill the application and one process remains with 50 percent cpu usage; not acceptable. In reading about this issue, this support forum, I toggled the browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2;false as suggested with result unchanged. At first I thought it was a result of Avast Internet Security 17.5.2302 running in the background. Because Avast showed one copy of Firefox running in the Sandbox; it's assigned task number could not be terminated at the Avast console. I closed down Avast; restarted ; opened Firefox. Task Manager shows two executables in process list. I saw on this support reference to partial and complete installer issues...have not tried that yet because of concerns with retaining profile and personal data. The system has a clean scan status. When Firefox is running normal (not in Sandbox) there is one firefoxexe process in windows taskmanager, and one in avast sandbox list. If I exitFireox/restartFirefox in Sandbox Avast will show two copies of Firefox in Sandbox; CPU is overloaded. The Windows Task Manager will show ONE application of FireFox; BUT three processes of Firefox exe. I believe my installer chose the 32bit version of FF due to available memory, although It has been running on 3.4 G RAM for a couple of years with Avast and Firefox without issue.

Problem solved; Firefox was running in sandbox when the update was done; I suspect the install was not successful as a result. I was reluctant to disable both firewall and internet security for possible malware attack. Eventually I did disable and recycle the system a couple of time during checks and the problem cleared. Several hours of operation without recurrence; Thanks!

Current Firefox releases have multi-process windows enabled. This means that you see more than one Firefox process running, one process for the main browser process and separate Firefox processes for content processes. The number of content processes is set via dom.ipc.processCount.

See the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" page under Application Basics: Multiprocess Windows.
