can't connect to smtp-mail.outlook.com
After many years of incident-free use of Thunderbird I find in the last while a persistent problem. It began on my old laptop and when I replaced it this week with a new one I thought the problem would be solved but it is not.
Symptoms: address book has disappeared when I go to write a new email
email won't send .,,,just gives msg "Connecting to smtp-mail.outlook.com
Attaching copy of full settings and a screen shot of the server settings for hotmail. (Also have a gmail a/c on T.Bird and it works fine).

I'm not sure what you mean. Either you want to open the real address book, which you can do through the menu Tools > Address Book or by adding the Contacts button to composition toolbar via Customize and then clicking it.
Or you want to see your contacts in the contacts sidebar in the mail composition window, which can be done via the menu View > Contacts Sidebar or by simply pressing F9.

unable to upload full settings ... any suggestions Tried as .odt and .rtf
The server name in the screenshot you posted is wrong. It says smtp-mail.outlook.com, but that is the name of the outgoing server. You should have pop-mail.outlook.com there.
For your outgoing server, you have to check the outgoing server settings. You can find them in the left panel one line up, click your accountname. Then you'll see the outgoing server (SMTP) configured for your outlook account. There you should have smtp-mail.outlook.com, port 587, connection security STARTTLS, authentication method normal password and your username.
Thanks Onno. Yes, it worked when I sent however it took a long time. Odd really as they were the settings automatically loaded when I installed TB on this new laptop.
Also can you comment on why I don't get access (in left pane) to address bk when I start a new email?
