Will changing mail.purge.ask to false in Config. Editor stop the compacting or just the asking?

I understand the need for "compacting folders" but the question gets annoying. I have read I can stop this by going into Config. Editor and changing mail.purge.ask to false.

Does this allow the compacting to proceed without asking me or does it stop the compacting altogether and force me to do it manually?

I'd rather T'Bird does it, I just don't want to answer the question several times/day.

thanks,

Rob

perhaps jusyt stop your anti virus scanning the Thunderbird profile and causing the compact to abort. I am guessing, but it is the most common cause of these types of issues.

On a Mac, what antivirus?

I have an Anti-Virus program I run manually once a month, MalwareBytes, rarely shows anything but since I only run it manually it can be the cause of this.

In any case can you answer my original question?

"it can't be the cause of this"

If you get frequent requests to compact, it may indicate a corruption of the mail folder. Rebuilding the folder, according to these instructions, may fix the problem. Essentially, you copy messages to another folder, close TB, delete the folder's mbox and index files, then restart TB to automatically create a new, uncorrupted folder.

Does nobody answer questions that are asked? I appreciate that you think you know the cause of my problem but my question is....

According to http://kb.mozillazine.org/Mail_and_news_settings

mail.purge.ask

"Whether to prompt before automatic compacting. Defaults to true in recent builds. See Customizing compacting for details."

The answer to your question is on the page cited in my first reply.

No we don't we answer the question in a manner that should eventually result in a properly running software. The reason settings are hidden is because they should no be used, except in a last resort. Or for very specialized use cases. You have not suggested anything special about your situation. You even forgot to mention you're using an operating system less than 10% of Thunderbird users actually use.

No one tests against the results of the hidden setting being changed. So what really might happen when you change a hidden setting is never really more than expected until you actually make the change. So we much prefer to try and establish what is causing the problem rather than answer inane questions about what a hidden preference is supposed to do. In this case, there is a bug report, perhaps you need to read it.

mail.purge.ask has a user interface, it is set when you click the don't ask me again in the dialog.
