With Firefox 83, the following change occurred:

  • Selecting a search engine at the bottom of the search panel [in the address bar] now enters search mode for that engine, allowing you to see suggestions (if available) for your search terms. The old behavior (immediately performing a search) is available with a shift-click.

I don't find this very useful since I have disabled search suggestions and would much rather have the old behavior of immediately performing a search when clicking the icon of my designed engine or site. My question is how do I disable the new change, and how do I re-enable the immediate search as default behavior so as to not have to shift-click for this?

Thank you.

Since the built-out of new features is not yet complete, there is a temporary preference you can flip to revert the button behavior. This exists in Firefox 83-84, but I don't know how long we'll have it.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste update2 and pause while the list is filtered

Firefox should display all the preferences related to the current round of changes.

(3) Double-click the browser.urlbar.update2.oneOffsRefresh preference to switch the value from true to false

That should take effect immediately.

Wow, thank you! This is exactly the type of solution I had in mind.

Something else you said has me curious though. When you say built-out of new feature, is that a feature they're working on to allow us to opt out of new build changes? That would be amazing if so. Where can I read more on the development plans for something like this?

It's a collection of changes to the search behavior to better unify the search experience from other search bars with the address bar. Unfortunately, I don't think it's going to give us more flexibility.
