In 4.0.1, the Bookmarks Toolbar displays icons & text. How to display only one?
Since upgrading to Firefox 4.0.1, my Bookmarks toolbar is way too long because it now displays an icon and text for each bookmark. I used to only display text. How can I reconfigure this preference?
View > Toolbars > Customize only changes the Google toolbar display.

Same for me, but I think this is because I'm using an add-on to display the icon only (the text appears when I mouse over the icon) and that particular add-on doesn't run under Firefox 4. As is often the case with add-ons, they might or might not be upgraded at all. It all depends on the developer of the add-on. But, I have started using the side-bar (which I think has been around for a while) and I'm going to use that because with one click I can make it appear or disappear; because I can manage the width of the panel it's in (up to a point); because I can create folders to hold other icons and not have to scroll as much; and because it's a FF feature vs. an add-on and more likely to be supported
Add code to userChrome.css below the @namespace line.
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Editing_configuration
- ChromEdit Plus: http://webdesigns.ms11.net/chromeditp.html
@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* only needed once */ /* Hide icons on the Bookmarks Toolbar */ #personal-bookmarks .toolbarbutton-icon { display: none !important; }
For a simple way to create extra space, right click on a bookmark and then in Properties you can abbreviate the name as much as you like right down to nothing.
"Nothing" will show the icon only. Hovering will show the name. And don't forget you can use folders in the Bookmarks Toolbar to hold related bookmarks, which can be opened individually right down to "Open All in Tabs".
I don't have the links to hand but there is an extension to remove icons and another to remove text.
Pardon me for asking but I presume you've got the double chevron (>) at the end of the toolbar with the overflow running down the right side. Sorry, but this might help some other users.

Correct; overflow is the concern. Thanks for the suggestions, everybody! Much obliged :)
It wasn't like this in v4, and now, suddenly, all the damm icons are back with no way to turn them all off. WTH?
cor-el, I appreciate the info but "Add code to userChrome.css below the @namespace line" makes absolutely zero sense to me.

Look at this extension:
- Bookmarks Deiconizer: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/bookmarks-deiconizer/
You can use the ChromEdit Plus extension to have easier access to customization files like userChrome.css.
- ChromEdit Plus: http://webdesigns.ms11.net/chromeditp.html
You can also use the Stylish extension.
Ah. Stylish worked like magic.
I like Magic.
Thank you, Cor-el.
