bookmarks not working

When I add bookmarks or delete old bookmarks, the changes are not saved after I restart firefox. I already tried deleting the places.sqlite file twice. Each time, the bookmarks are saved for a day or 2, but then my changes go back to not being saved. I am using firefox 4.
