I was notified a pop-up was blocked, and I accidentally clicked "Don't show info bar when pop-ups are blocked". How do I get the info bar back?

I have Firefox 23.0.1. I was notified when a pop-up was blocked when visiting a particular website, and clicked the "Options" button. I accidentally chose the "Don't show info bar when pop-ups are blocked" option. Pop-ups are still being blocked and I've confirmed the "Block pop-up windows" is still checked in the "Content" tab, but I'd still like to be get notice again when a website tries to open a pop-up that Firefox blocks. I've already tried the "Restart in Safe Mode" and "Reset Firefox" to return to default as suggested in other articles, but still doesn't seem to notify me any longer. Any ideas?

Hello briank22,

go to about:config, find :

privacy.popups.showBrowserMessage

and

browser.popups.showPopupBlocker

and be sure it is the default TRUE (if it is false, double-click on each one to make it true)

thank you

Hi ideato,

Both of those boolean "Type" values are already "True".

If the privacy.popups.showBrowserMessage pref is set to true then you should get the notification bar at the top.

You can see a pop-up block icon in the right corner of the Status Bar if you have chosen to hide the information bar at the top.
You can left-click that pop-up block icon on the Status Bar and remove the check mark from "Don't show info message when pop-ups are blocked".

You can inspect and manage the permissions for all domains on the about:permissions page or for the domain in the currently selected tab by clicking the "Site Identity Button" (globe/padlock) on the location bar and "More Information" to open "Page Info" and go to the Permissions tab.

No, the notification bar doesn't show up on the top.

Also, the "pop-up block icon" on the right-hand side of the status bar next to the Star icon (Bookmark this page) doesn't show up either.

What I've learned since asking this question is that the problem only seems to pertain to the website on which I originally clicked the "Don't show info bar when pop-ups are blocked" that it doesn't show the info bar(or the pop-up block icon) in the address bar. When I visit another website and a pop-up is blocked by Firefox, then the info bar (and icon) shows up like it originally did.

I've checked the about:permissions settings both for the website in question, and for "All sites", and both have "Open Pop-up Windows" set to "Block". When I click the "Site Identity Button" (Globe), "More Information", in the Permissions tab both the website on which I clicked "Don't show the info bar" and others, "Open Pop-up Windows" setting have "Use default" checked and Block (though greyed out) selected.

Maybe you disabled the pop-up blocker by accident. Please try the following:

  1. Go to the Firefox options
  2. Open the Content tab
  3. Check the Block pop-up windows option

If this doesn't fix the issue, try the following:

  1. Repeat steps 1 & 2 from above
  2. Click the Exceptions... button next to the Block pop-up windows option
  3. Ensure that the address of the site that caused the issue is not included in the exceptions list

We hope to hear from you soon.

what you could also try is to clear the whole history for the site in question (attention: this will also delete any stored passwords for this domain!)

Hi philipp,

Clearing the history by saying "Forget about this site" seemed to work, but after closing Firefox and visiting the site again, the Info bar failed to display (and no "pop-up block icon" on the right side of the Status bar).

Upon comparison with my other computer(laptop), in about:config I've run into an interesting value. In about:config, there's a Preference Name "datareporting.policy.dataSubmissionPolicyResponseType" with a value of "accepted-info-bar-dismissed", whereas on the laptop the value is "accepted-info-bar-button-pressed". I'm not sure this has any relationship, so I didn't change anything yet.

Upon further troubleshooting, it seems that on the website in question, the info bar shows up the first time (or after you 'Forget about this site'), but on subsequent visits after the website has already created cookies with you, then the info bar no longer appears to notify you it has blocked 2 pop-ups.

Seems like some sort of bug doesn't it?

What's worse is Firefox opened the pop-ups after I clicked on a completely blank area of the website before I closed the Info bar / clicked the "x" on the right-hand side. No, I didn't change any options, and there are no "Exceptions" in my "Block pop-up windows" list. BTW, the website in question is www.kfog.com, a simple local Radio / Music site.

How do I submit a bug report?

If there is no pop-up block icon on the location bar then it is not likely that pop-ups are blocked on that specific page.

I'm not seeing a pop-up block icon on the page that you posted (www.kfog.com).
If I click "Listen live" then a new window opens with a Flash player to listen to this station.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

The pop-ups on this page are not blocked because they are opened upon the user's request.

When you click the Listen Live button, you are telling the Firefox pop-up blocking tool that it is ok for this pop-up to open. These are no considered pop-ups, just a new window.

If you want Firefox to block all pop-ups, consider downloading a pop-up blocker from the Firefox Add-ons Store.
