VERY slow not responding
Disabled all add-ons, created new data base, compacted folders, POP account, no McAfee virus protection, re-installed-normal for a couple of minutes then back to VERY slow in opening or moving of mail.

Does the problem go away?
In safe mode Thunderbird responds normally.
Make sure not to let your anti-virus software scan the Thunderbird profile folder. Also, don't let it scan incoming and outgoing messages and attachments.
