I am having delays when viewing my emails and when typing emails. There is an icon that looks like a pie chart that is going in circles. Thunderbird is slow.

Thunderbird is running very slow. When I am reading emails or typing an email I get a circle icon that looks like a spinning pie chart. When that appears I cannot do anything but wait for it to go away. Any suggestions to speed up Thunderbird and get rid of the spinning pie chart?
