Could using Firefox 48 with Trusteer Rapport on OSX 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion) pose a significant risk to online banking security?

Trusteer Rapport no longer supports use of Safari with Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.5 and I do not wish to upgrade Mountain Lion as some of my other software will no longer function. It has been suggested that I install Firefox 48 and retain Mountain but I am concerned about security for banking when not using the latest edition of Firefox. I am told that Firefox 49 is not compatible with my system. Could this pose a significant risk to online banking security? Or what other risks are present?

First, it is true that Firefox 49 and later will not run on your version of MacOS. Mozilla has disclosed certain security issues with Firefox 48 here (it's under the list of what was fixed in Firefox 49): https://www.mozilla.org/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox.html

You could use the "Extended Support Release" of Firefox 45, which will continue to receive critical security updates for many more months. This page has more information: https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/organizations/

Firefox 49.0 and later requires OSX 10.9 and later. You do have a option in still getting security updates with Firefox by using 45.0 ESR. The 45.8.0esr will be out when Firefox 53.0 is released. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-osx
