Bookmarks Toolbar icons in update 50 go off window? Now a greater spacing between icons in this update
When I updated to firefox 50 i noticed my icons for the bookmark toolbar now filled up the whole window, but I now have to use the drop down arrow to select the ones that do not fit.
I then downgraded to 49.02 and they are once again how they were. They dont go off window and I do not need to select the drop down arrow to see more bookmarks as they fit fine.
Whats up with 50?

I have the same problem. I always have a number of bookmarks in the overflow but with Fx50 I have fewer bookmarks on the main toolbar. Specifically, two folders with short names have spilled into the overflow.

Fred McD, thanks for your reply. I know all about the Multirows and have chosen not to use them. Not a big deal but I would love to know from someone what has really caused this problem and whether it can be fixed.

Thanks Fred but that add on is not for me.
Anyone else having this issue or a possible fix?
aragula to get more on your Bookmarks Toolbar(from an earlier answer of mine) some of this might help - As a general suggestion that might help very many users, I save a considerable number of bookmarks on to the Bookmarks Toolbar where they are much easier to access. Space can be saved in all sorts of ways - the bookmark names can be abbreviated right down to just the icon if you are familiar with it. Grouping the icons with similiar websites helps e.g. News, Sports sites etc. To take that one step further, bookmarks can be grouped in Folders with short names e.g. Weather, Travel, Stores etc.
I don't consider bookmarks overflow down the right hand side of the screen to be a problem as I am very familiar with what is there.
You can delete the icon and use an abbreviated name but I wouldn't recommend that. You will soon become familiar with very many icons.

I have plenty of room from my last icon until the edge of the screen. I have a 1920x1080 monitor and about 1.250 inches of room from my last icon to the right of my screen. Thats about 5 icons of room to spare.
I have no text on any bookmark to save even more room. So there is only an icon.
I have the bookmarks toolbar because of ease of use and only one click access to favorites. I dont want them in sub-folders or any kind of drop down menu. Thats the point of toolbar. One click access.
I see nothing in release notes that changed bookmarks icon toolbar behavior, but if I can downgrade to 49 and the problem goes away. Then they obviously changed something in 50.
I have had the toolbar like this for years and thru all these updates. Now at update 50 the bookmarks toolbar changes?
I shouldn't have to go thru hoops to get something that should work, to work. If there are any parameters in about:config that can adjust this. It would be nice to know which so I could fix.
Thanks!
Hello, any chance it's an add-on compatibility issue?
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
- Click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
- On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
- On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
- On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".
If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.
To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.
Aragula I think our attitudes are essentially the same.
Scribe Are you on the right question? On my computer at least, Safe Mode disables extensions but also, as mentioned in your post, " custom settings", including the Bookmarks Toolbar which is the subject of interest. I can't think of any recent changes except Fx50.
So I took a screenshot of 49.02 and 50. I compared them together and the spacing in version 50 between toolbar icons is greater. Thus it is causing icons to move off window.
I tried uninstalling to a clean version of 50 but no luck. Including removing of all folders in AppData and install directories for mozilla.
Some websites recommend making a userchrome.css and making the padding 0px. I have had no luck.
Anyone have an idea or can help?
Hi, you seem to have tried most things, but can you try disabling all your add-ons and any theme, then restart FF.
Also click on Restore Defaults as shown here: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars.
As a last resort, first back up your bookmarks for extra safety in case they get lost: Open bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import and Backup > Backup, and save them to somewhere convenient on your computer. If you ever need to restore them: Open bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import and Backup > Restore.
Now try Refresh, which will create a new profile: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings.
arugula,
No System Details were posted, but that screenshot shows what looks like the Classic Theme Restorer extension toolbar UI.
Is CTR up to date? IOW, the latest version? Easier to disable that one extension than to play with Safe Mode and lose them all to test for CTR being potential culprit. Never used CTR - the worse toolbar UI that Firefox has ever had, IMO.'
iirc, that extra padding was first mentioned in Firefox 47 or 48 on Mac OSX. And iirc, there has been mention of that on Windows in Firefox 49 or 50. I think jscher2000 came up with the userChrome.css code to revert that change within the last week or so, but since I consider the Bookmarks Toolbar a "waste of space" and never use it I wasn't really paying attention to that discussion.

I didnt post a screen shot. That was from Fred. My only add on installed is minimize to tray. But like i just mentioned before same issue after clean install with no ad ons installed yet.
If extra padding was mentioned in 47 or so. There should be a way of user control. This extra padding is not needed. Why do my icons need to be separated so much and have all that space wasted?
Can you post that code here? so I can revert the not needed spacing. Again, this should be user controlled. Put something in the about:config for us to customize our selves.

the-edmeister, any luck with this?
I guess this is a lost cause? No option to customize?
