Go to Run (or Windows key + R), enter Thunderbird, and hit Return. If it opens, Thunderbird is on your system and the shortcut on your desktop just disappeared. To put it back, go to Programs, and scroll till you find Thunderbird. Right click it and select "Pin to Start."

Thank you very much , I solved it by reverting to an earlier date but your solution is much more practical. Will keep it in mind.
