I'm assuming you have added the contacts into an address book eg: 'Personal Address Book'. Then you created a mailing list as a sub group in the 'Personal Address Book'. Then you select the contacts in the 'Personal Address Book' and drag and drop them into the Mailing List. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-create-and-use-mailing-lists-thunderbird
