URL bar drop down triangle has disappeared after update
An update to Firefox occurred today (now Vers 77.01 -- 64bit) and since then the small drop down triangle on the RHS of the URL bar has disappeared, so that now the only way to gain access to the favorite URL sites is to delete what ever is in the URL bar then click in the empty space and then the drop down frequently watched sites appear.
This process has to be done every time you want to visit a new favorite site --- very annoying.
If the URL in the URL bar is long it is necessary to highlight and delete a number of times to get the empty URL bar
So what has always been a very easy process to go from one website to another is now a long process ---- definitely not a smart move by the program's developers and I have no idea why it could possibly have been considered that removing this facility was a good move.
As the old saying goes "if it aint broke don't fix it" !!!!!!!
Also since the upgrade the entry for Google in the drop down list of favorite sites has completely disappeared --- possibly my most used web site, now I have to type the full address in every time.
I have tried the various suggestions on a number of forums to bring back the triangle but none of these have worked.
Can the Firefox software developers acknowledge their mistake and immediately undertake another update to correct this problem, otherwise I am sure that like me many users will start to look for another browser.
This latest update makes absolutely no sense.

Hello...
(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste URLB and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the browser.urlbar.openViewOnFocus preference to switch the value from true to false
After that, to show the classic history list in the drop-down, you can either:
press the space bar (type a space) press the down arrow key type ^ to initiate a history search

Hi casale, you might not have noticed this last suggestion here:

You can inspect and modify the Top Sites setting via "Options/Preferences -> Home".
If you don't curate your Top Sites list on the Firefox Home / New Tab page in a way that makes it useful on a regular basis, you can turn off that list to prevent Firefox from using it in the address bar drop-down. If you do that, Firefox will switch to dropping down the "Show History" list.
To make this change, go to the Options page, click Home in the left column, then uncheck the Top Sites box:
Is that a workable option for you?
Ankit,
I have tried to do that at least four times today and it doesn't work on my Firefox (Vers 77.01), the only way that I can now get to the favorites drop down menu is to do as I explained in my communication.
All that I want is to have my Firefox browser reverted to the way it operated yesterday and ever since I first installed the program many years ago --- an inverted triangle in the URL bar that once clicked on will immediately bring up the drop down favorites menu from which you can select a favorite (ie frequently visited) web site and go straight to it without having to do all the steps that you now have to do to get to the same desired web site.
However I thank you for your speedy reply.

The original solution was for Firefox 75. Due to changes in Firefox 77, the original solution is obsolete and there are new options. Firefox supports an optional style sheet file named userChrome.css that we can use to modify the toolbar area, including taming the expanding address bar. Setting up your first userChrome.css file is about a 10 minute project, so when you have time to dive in, here are some threads to check out: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1283911#answer-1303777 https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1284030#answer-1304125 https://www.userchrome.org/megabar-styling-firefox-address-bar.html#mbarstyler More background on userChrome.css files: https://www.userchrome.org/
