How can Firefox set tabs to be adjustable width automatically, so all tabs can fit on one screen without having to scroll right or left, like Chrome does or some old Firefox versions?

This is a lot faster than scrolling. Chrome works great at this. My system: Window XP, Firefox 3.6.13.

You can change a hidden preference to set the minimum width of a tab.

  1. Type about:config into the location bar and press enter
  2. Accept the warning message that appears, you will be taken to a list of preferences
  3. Locate the preference browser.tabs.tabMinWidth and double-click on it to change its value, it is the number of pixels, default value 100, minimum value is 38

This will no longer work in Firefox 4 when it is released. For Firefox 4 probably the easiest way to do this is with the Custom Tab Width extension - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/custom-tab-width
