For details on using it see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Using+the+spell+checker
You have the English-GB version, that one does not include a dictionary, you can install one from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/language-tools
Hi Tony
Thanks for that, I have followed the link and its now installed. However the spell check does seem to be working in a Microsoft word document, but not when I try to update my website pages - which is where I really need it.
Any ideas??
Thanks
Jude
The Firefox spell checker only works inside text boxes in Firefox. Microsoft Word uses its own spell checker. Firefox does not include a web page editor, so whatever application you use to edit web pages may not include a spell checker.
I have used firefox for some time. I have always been able to have and use a spell editor. I purchased a new computer and the Firefox installed is 4.0.1 I can not get any spell editor to work. I have installed it, it underlines the misspelled word in red and that is it. There is no more support - there is no icon for spell check - I can not click on the misspelled word to see an spelling suggestions. This is totally useless to me. Does anyone know how I can get a spell editor to work with Firefox?
Do you have a dictionary installed and selected?
You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu.
You can open the "Add Dictionaries" link to install a dictionary if you do not have one.
Make sure that [X] "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu has a tick.
You can enable or disable spell checking globally:
- Tools > Options > Advanced : General: Browsing: "Check my spelling as I type"

You can look here for dictionaries:
I am using Firefox 5 and have the same problem. I did install the English dictionary from the Mozilla addon page and yet, if I right click in a text box, I have a HUGE context menu with two dictionary entries. The one at the top offers (No spelling suggestions) and "Add to dictionary". The one way down on the context menu offers "Check spelling", which shows a check mark. The "Add dictionaries" and Laguages/Add to dictionary. No dictionary is listed, although I have installed the darned thing more than once. If I click Add Dictionaries..., not a dammed thing happens. And that is it. It is like I have NO dictionary installed and this really sucks. There were times when the dictionary worked and I did not have this ten foot tall context menu. But when I do, there are NO spelling suggestions and No way to add any dictionary to satisfy Firefox. This bites. Any suggestions?

Which Firefox locale do you have and is there a dictionary selected?
You can see that in the prefs general.useragent.locale and spellchecker.dictionary on the about:config page. You can open about: pages via the location bar like you open a website.
If the "Add Dictionaries" link doesn't work then download and install the dictionary directly from the Add-ons site.
Your issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.
Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
- Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
