Bookmarks sidebar is empty, bookmarks still there!

My bookmarks sidebar is suddenly completely empty. All my bookmarks are still there and I can see them on the bookmark drop-down menu and they work fine. I just can't have them display in the sidebar. History shows up fine in the sidebar. No new skins or add-ons installed recently. I updated to the latest version of firefox and it didn't help.

Of note: Firefox sync has been displaying an error message today as well and is not syncing.

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
