Before I even do anything on my computer I notice connections to static.zlb.phx.mozilla.net at 72.21.91.29 and numerous connections to compute-1.amazonaws.com. Should I be concerned? Can they be blocked?

Firefox comes with a Windows service that runs independently of the browser. This service is used to check for updates. To see whether the update service is causing the startup connections, you can try disabling it in the update settings.

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > Update mini-tab

Uncheck the box for "Use a background service to install updates"

(I don't know if that is at all related to the Amazon AWS connection.)
