This has been valuable clue as there is no language shown. However in selecting the Marco Pinto English Dictionary The apparently clear instructions for loading the .XPI file cannot be followed through as I cannot find that file.

Therefore I cannot progress the problem.

Does the dialogue box tell you which language you're checking, or in other words, which dictionary it's using? Many failures of spell check boil down to the dictionary having been de-selected.
