I have created a new profile and I have the settings as shown in the screenshot. For some unknown reason, only my boss's emails will not mark as 'read' immediately upon viewing.

I guess my next step is going to be to completely delete Thunderbird and try to reimport all the emails which I have backed up to my gmail account.

This is completely bizarre. It has happened on 2 brand new computers and I have actually went to the effort of uninstalling and reinstalling Thunderbird 3 times on the first one. Once the brand new iMac running an even newer OS had the same exact problem, I gave up. This is a Thunderbird issue that dates back several years if you Google it. Makes no sense why one email address would not get marked as read immediately while all others do.
