Changes are saved when you close Firefox completely, not just a tab.

If a change isn't getting saved, you probably have something installed which is changing the pref each time you start Firefox. You need to get rid of the cause, t00.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

I found the culprit - Freerip Toolbar by Spigot Inc. changes the Keyword Url line to Yahoo every time the PC boots up. Should be fine now. Many thanks for your assistance, folks.
