Via the Windows control panel the display is set to 1280x1024 and I see this resolution when I use Internet Explorer. Running Windows XP on a Dell Optiplex 755

Did try disable the hardware acceleration?

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.

You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

Then perform these steps:

  • Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
  • In the Firefox options window click the Advanced tab, then select "General".
  • In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
  • Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

Thanks for the suggestion but under the General tab there is no Settings listed.

I did a safe mode restart and the resolution problem still exist. I'd like to move from Internet Explorer to Firefox but the resolution problem is stopping me.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in compatibility mode.
You can open the Properties of the Firefox desktop shortcut via the right-click context menu and check the "Compatibility" tab.
Make sure that all items are deselected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window.

Cor-el, No boxes are checked in the compatibility tab. Thanks for trying!! Phil

Is all of Firefox comically enlarged, or just the page content?

To reduce the size of page content, try zooming out a couple of times. Hold down the Ctrl key and tap the - key until the page reaches a more normal appearance. Does that help, or is it unreadable?

You can set the layout.css.devPixelsPerPx pref on the about:config page to 1.0 or on Windows 8 to 1.25 and if necessary adjust layout.css.devPixelsPerPx starting from 1.0 in 0.1 or 0.05 steps (1.1 or 0.9) to make icons show correctly.

Use an extension to adjust the text size in the user interface and the page zoom in the browser window.

You can look at this extension to adjust the font size for the user interface.

You can look at the Default FullZoom Level or NoScript extension if web pages need to be adjusted after changing layout.css.devPixelsPerPx.

I did what you said. The default was -1 I changed it to 1. I went back and checked that the change took place and it did but when I started it back up there was no improvement.

Let me say, that this screen here looks just fine. I notice the resolution problem when I open my email at go daddy of when I open Espn.

I used to be able to open my email with Internet Explorer but for some reason it stopped be able to open the Go Daddy email. That is why I switched to Firefox. When IE opened my email it looked high res not like it looks with Firefox.

Thanks for your time.

Hi Phil, did it make any difference if you play around with the zoom level on the problem sites?

  • Ctrl+0 (that's a zero) resets to the dimensions specified by the page
  • Ctrl+ enlarges
  • Ctrl- reduces

You can rename (or delete) the content-prefs.sqlite file to content-prefs.sqlite.old in the Firefox profile folder to reset the page zoom for all websites.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:
