When I click the drop down list from Bookmarks it is too wide. If there is a folder in the list with content it is shown far to the right. By the time I move the mouse over to where the content of the folder is it disappears. Am using Mac OSX Lion. I tried scrolling over the corners and sides of the drop list to look for re-sizing handles but none appear. It's not just version Firefox 31 as it has been happening for some time now. Any ideas please?

That can be caused by having some bookmarks with a long title in the main Bookmarks menu. The width of a column in the Bookmarks menu list is in current Firefox versions automatically adjusted to fit the bookmark with the longest name. You can check the names of the bookmarks and make the longer ones shorter.
