Upon a recent Firefox update, my bookmarks reverted to a previous state. Here is how I fixed the issue

1. First I reviewed the following thread https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/920478

2. Next I reviewed the content of the following folder in my Window 7 workstation %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\{my default profile folder}\bookmarkbackups

3. I noticed that for the most recent backup version the file name deviated from the norm as so

E.g. ... ... ... bookmarks-2014-06-08_368.json bookmarks-2014-06-09_367.json bookmarks-2014-07-22_355.json bookmarks-2014-07-23_355.json bookmarks-2014-08-16_355_ssDjU4Xo4VtvQUKE29QagQ==.json

4. So after backup up, I renamed "bookmarks-2014-08-16_355_ssDjU4Xo4VtvQUKE29QagQ==.json" to "bookmarks-2014-08-16_355.json"

5. That did the trick. I got back all my most recent bookmarks.

hello, the filename of the bookmark-backup files follows a new format after firefox 31 (for background see bug #818584). so this is a change that would be expected and shouldn't affect your current bookmarks in the browser.
