I love Thunderbird but somehow I can't figure out how to insert an internet link in my outgoing mail. but if my correspondent replies and resends my Email to me, the link has become operative.

Links and email addresses are not active in the compose window. As long and you type them correctly they will be active when sent. You can save the message to Drafts and see it become active or send it to yourself as a test.

If you compose using HTML then you can also use Insert|Link to create pretty links like this.

Same caveat as Airmail mentioned; it won't be active in the Compose window.
