TB 52.1.1 (32-bit) on Win10 is unstable (embedded images lost, freazes when editing, ...). Including crash @ shutdownhang | _PR_MD_WAIT_CV | _PR_WaitCondVar...
Dear Thunderbird team.
After updating to TB 52.1.1 (32-bit) on Win10 pro, many problems occured which haven't been there in the TB release before: 1) It is unstable. 2) Embedded images are lost (both when a received email contained an image as well as when I put an image from the clipboard into the editor. In the editor it was there. After sending the send directory showed the mail without the image but said that there is an attachment with unkonwn size). 3) Invitations are shown incompletely (header only) --> Problem with Lightning? 4) Sometimes it freezes when editing or pressing to send. Even when saved to the drafts directory this happens again. 5) It works together with Enigmail not as good as before (I use the same Enigmail plugin 1.9.6.1 as before). E.g. it sometimes disables the send button.
When will you have a stable release version again?
Best regards Bernhard
PS: How could such a version like 52.1. pass the quality checks? Is this a resource problem at your site? If so, please consider to use help from other open-source communities. I often heard it is very hard to cooperate with the core developers of Thunderbird. But this is only by hearsay.
PPS: I am a long-term user of Thunderbird and would like to continue so. However, I got colleagues who think about leaving Thunderbird because the stability decreases and the announcements are more about politics than concrete developments and code. Please think about that. This is well-meant feedback.

p.s. https://sourceforge.net/p/enigmail/bugs/687/ is an example of a major enigmail issue that still exists in Thunderbird 52
Hello Wayne, this blog exactly deals with one of the 4 issues. So I hope Enigmail to fix this issue with a new version of Enigmail as Patrick described. I also applied the two suggested workarounds: First, cancel send, save to draft, and send it again. This worked for maybe 5 mails and then the problem was tehre again. Secondly, killing als gpg processes and restart TB always worked.

Please describe. And do you have crash reports with crash IDs?

There have been a number of issues, as listed in the release notes. Bug reports are needed to get action. If you did not see your issue in https://mzl.la/2s4Lv3Y then please file a bug report

I am not familiar with this area.
> 4) Sometimes it freezes when editing or pressing to send. Even when saved to the drafts directory this happens again.
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Memory_Usage_Problems covers performance issues. If the items there do not help then please file a bug report
> 5) It works together with Enigmail not as good as before (I use the same Enigmail plugin 1.9.6.1 as before). E.g. it sometimes disables the send button.
That is likely enigmail responsibility to resolve. But FWIW, here are recent bug reports to Thunderbird https://mzl.la/2s4ccWy

This depends on what your stability issue is, which you haven't detailed yet.
> PS: How could such a version like 52.1. pass the quality checks? Is this a resource problem at your site?
Unfortunately perfect releases don't exist. Often we must upgrade users before all major issues are resolved. We try to avoid doing that, but there are security issues to be considered, and we also consider that on balance the newer version is better than the older version, even if the new release has new issues.
You are correct, there are many things we need - more developers, more help from users in betas and reporting bugs, and we also need add-on authors to update their programs in a more timely manner.
As you can tell by the release notes of 52 and betas, we are fixing many issues in every iteration [1]. You might find it helpful to run the beta so that you get the fixes sooner http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/channel/

Thanks for the feedback.
Stability ALWAYS decreases in the initial weeks of a new version - that's true for Firefox and Thunderbird. It takes 3-4 months for stability to get to more ideal numbers. You can see in the progression of 52.0.1 to 52.1.1 that every interation is getting better https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/crashes-per-day/?p=Thunderbird&v=45.8.0&v=52.0.1&v=52.1.0&v=52.1.1&hang_type=any&os=Windows&os=Mac+OS+X&os=Linux&date_start=2017-05-10&date_end=2017-05-31&submit=Generate
The best thing users can do to help is to report issues early, and often. And also using beta. If they don't report issues then we can't fix them. The second best thing they can do is to contribute. They can't expect free software to be always supported by the same overworked volunteers. People (like you) need to get involved, get their hands dirty

Perhaps you can share with these colleagues and other users your own experiences with when dealing with Thunderbird community. And certainly, encourage them to be more vocal and speak up in forums where the larger Thunderbird community will take notice.

This a very godd suggestion -- I'll do so. Thanks.

Wayne. Thanks a lot for your answers. Besides #2 (embedded images) and #3 (incomplete invitations) I consider the other topics I had mentioned as solved (or as accepted so that a bug fix is almost ready).
Thanks for the updates.
I would not say #1 is making progress, without knowing your crash IDs. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/mozilla-crash-reporter#w_viewing-crash-reports
On the other hand, if you managed to stop the crashes, I'd like to know how you did it :)

Hello Wayne. Sorry, I forgot to write down the bug report number I sent in: bp-b67431ef-0ab9-4fda-bad4-1dc670170603 Thanks for your quick and competent replies, Bernhard
I have seen plenty of shutdownhang crashes in connection with the Enigmail problem. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1323515

That crash ID correlates to https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1360555
Is this your only crash report? (they are listed in help > troubleshooting) Do you submit all your crash reports?

Is this your only crash report? (they are listed in help > troubleshooting) Do you submit all your crash reports?I have had no other crashes, but even when diabling Enigmail and restarting Thunderbird, I sometimes can't send email with attachments.
This happened the first time after updating to 52.1. (I currently have 52.1.1).
