I'm not quite sure where the problem occurred.

Unless the website instructs Firefox not to open a PDF in a tab, Firefox usually will display the PDF in its built-in viewer. The viewer has a download button along the top that should give you a clean PDF file. If you want to bypass the viewer in all cases, you can change your setting on the Preferences page. This article will get you to that setting so you can download more directly: View PDF files using Firefox’s built-in viewer.

Sometimes websites do not send a .pdf file extension. You may need to rename a downloaded file with a .pdf file extension in that case (assuming its internal format is PDF).
