Since December and randomly Thunderbird has been deleting my business emails. Today I caught it in action. I read an email in my inbox pressed the delete button as I normally do, and instantly my last months emails disappeared. This time they were in the deleted items folder, so whats left of them I have moved to an archive folder. Previously when this happened I moved them back to my inbox but they have now gone completely. About 8 months of business emails have gone and gone from the server as well, my inbox is completely empty. Used Thunderbird for years of and on and never had this problem. I am using IMAP and all setting are set to retain emails. Sent item folder still ok junk still there,I am at a loss. Any idea whats going on?

I think if you have a look at your copy of outlook it will be set to delete the copies, which is why the mails diappear in bulk.

However the other common causes of complaints such as yours are;

  • A phone that downloads the mail and deleted them.
  • An IMAP account where the server is configured with aging rules on mail. Most US based ISPs have some sort of aging, even if it is just automatic emptying of the trash.
  • Whole folder of mail deleted when you click automatic fix in an anti virus alert.

I think I am on to this one. I run Mint but some of my old stuff is still on Windows XP. I open XP which is dual boot when I have to do tax stuff for the business since I run Quickbooks. The tax dept needs IE to log into there site and the information you send them so I have to run XP and Quickbooks. Now on XP I had Outlook set to start on start up and Outlook was setup to run POP3 so what I am thinking is every few months when I do my tax on XP I am causing a conflict on the server with Thunderbird and though they are both set to retain copies on the server the conflict seems to be deleting them.

Just when I thought I had fixed it, the last 2 weeks of emails have just disappeared. Only Thunderbird has accessed the server, no other computer, or telephone. It is as if when I try to delete one message using the delete button it is deleting all. It is not putting them in the deleted items folder but deleting them completely.
