Firefox update turns keeping history on again

more options

Hi,

After update to Firefox 69.0.1 (maybe before), keeping history is turned on again. I explicitly turned this of. Is this a bug?

Cheers, B.

Hi Bezz,

Are you referring to toggling whether Firefox will, "Remember History" or "Never remember history" under Privacy & Security?

Is it only after an update?

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

Is this about the "Remember browsing and download history" setting in "Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security" ?

This setting is stored in a pref (places.history.enabled) on the about:config page, so if you lose this setting then there is a problem with the preferences.

There is software like Advanced SystemCare with its Surfing Protection feature that can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software or cleaners like CCleaner then check the settings or uninstall this software.

Hi,

Yes, I am referring to this toggle. I found out after this specific update, so I assume it was the update, but something else could have triggered it, only I wouldn't know.

I have F-Secure, but I don't use the surfing protection facilities. I had changed the setting to 'Never remember'. This worked for a while. If such software prevents such changes, I actually would rather not install it, then.

Well, this is funny. If I check Options (upper right, cogwheel), it says that it will never remember. In about:config | places.history.enabled is set to True. So if these two relate, is this a bug?

"Never remember history" means that you use Private Browsing mode.

This is stored in a different pref (browser.privatebrowsing.autostart), but if you lose this setting then this is still about not keeping pref settings stored in prefs.js in the profile folder.

If your Firefox created a new profile, it wouldn't have that setting. However, a new profile often is drastically different, so you wouldn't miss a change like that.

That setting also would be lost if you ever used the Refresh feature. Refresh also would default your toolbar layout and remove many add-ons, so again, you probably would notice that.
