Thunderbird email problems

These are questions about Mozilla Thunderbird email portal not about Firefox Browser which I use and have no problems with. Have been using "Thunderbird" for maybe 4 months now and several problems. 

(1 )There are no entries in my "deleted" or "trash" folders. Where might they be?

(2) The system regularly asks me to "compact files now" which I agree to BUT again where do they go. (3) My screen menu shows an "archive" folder with a belt buckle symbol but nothing in there Can that be where stuff is if so how does one open it. thanks Raynor J
