Hi Mozilla community,

I just finished a new PC (Win10 Pro) some days ago and setup Firefox mailto. After I changed e-mail program to Outlook (Office 2019) and clicked on send link via e-mail it automatically opens endless e-mail windows and blank tabs until the PC crashes. The process cannot be stopped. Reinstallation could not solve the problem.

Does anyone has an idea? I could only find a similar problem some years ago but it is no solution for my problem https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1212933#answer-1098427

Default setting was google mail. Is this how it should be or did Chrome installation caused that?

Thanks

Did you check your default mail program in Windows? See Change the program used to open email links under the Setting your operating system's default mail program section.

Also make sure that the mailto protocol is set to open in Outlook rather than Google. I don't know how to do that on Windows 10. On Windows 7, it's under Default Programs -> Associate a file type or Protocol with a program (screenshot below).

I also found this at Microsoft's Windows 10 forum: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-other_settings-winpc/mailto-not-working-in-windows-10/121e4fbf-7f63-4b9a-9dcb-201404c71552

To reset the program Firefox uses for email links, see: Change the program used to open email links

You get tabs opening endlessly if you select Firefox as the application to handle a file when you get an "Open with" dialog.

Check the Mailto application in Firefox -> Preferences -> Applications Make sure it isn't set to the Firefox application because Firefox can't handle the mailto protocol internally and you will get tabs opening endlessly.

Thank you for your help. Both suggestions did not work. The proplem appeared AFTER I set/changed Firefox -> Preferences -> Applications -> Outlook. it also does not explain why there are endless e-mail windows opened. Looks like firefox sends "mailto" commands endlessly when set to outlook.

Great! After I changed default mail program also in Windows to Outlook and reinstalled Firefox again including all data, it does not appear again. Really strange. Thank you.
