website desktop shortcut creation procedure does not work

more options

I am using Firefox 96.0 running on Ubuntu 20.04. The procedure described on this site to create a desktop shortcut for a website (click on padlock, drag it to the desktop and release) does not work. A grayed image of the URL being dragged moves onto the desktop when dragged, but when the mouse button is released that grayed image springs back to the URL field.

I also tried the alternate procedure i.e. drag a shortcut from the Bookmarks menu onto the desktop. The same failure sequence as described above occurred.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hello, If I got your problem correct, you have an issue creating a shortcut. If you right click on the desktop (or the location you want to create a shortcut), In the dropdown box, New>Shortcut, should be able to create a new shortcut of the URL you enter.

If you want to use the method you mentioned, Select the URL (near padlock). Then, drag that to your desktop.

I am sorry if I misunderstood your problem.

First off, I mean nothing personal RE the thumbs down. It just wanted to indicate that what was suggested didn't work for me. I'm not into playing computer snark games, and I appreciate all the help I am afforded.

Sorry to say, the above procedures do not work for me.

Least I misunderstood what was suggested, I will describe all of the failure modes I observe.

When I am on the Ubuntu desktop and I right click, there is no option for creating a shortcut. The only thing "new" that can be created there is a folder.

When I am in a folder (where I'd really like to create shortcuts, because I'm into hierarchically organizing my system) and I right click, the only "new" options are to create a new folder, or create a new document [untitled document].

(As an aside, as I understand the above two options did exist in older REVs of Ubuntu, but for some reason(s) (why???) this functionality was removed from the default Gnome user interface, which is what I'm using.)

When I am in Firefox, and it is displaying the URL I wish to generate a shortcut for, and I right click, there is no create-shortcut option, only options to save the page to various places in various ways.

Must some setup option be selected, or some add-in software be installed, either in the Ubuntu OS itself or as a Firefox extension, to enable this functionality? If so, I have not done so.

Again, thanks in advance for your help.

Mike

I am so sorry to hear that it did not work Mike! It was just a suggestion. For the side of good, please do check with the Help and Support team of "Ubuntu" also.

Thanks for the followup, never the less. I'll check with some of the Linux folks and see what they have to say.
