Generally this is caused by firewalls and anti virus programs actively preventing Thunderbird accessing the internet. The assumption is the password must be wrong. It rarely is.

I suggest you try the support article for not being able to send mail. It covers most of the basics. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/cannot-send-messages
