I need advice on how to allow this update without it wiping out all of my bookmarks and stored login information.

Every time I have allowed an automatic update I lose everything and my computer shuts down.

Then go to Mozilla archive site for Firefox and find the latest version and download and install over the older version but this time during installation choose option "customize" so it uses the settings you installed with otherwise the standard will either wipe or move your settings.
