Where do I find Tools? I want to change the headings of my windows so that I can read them. They are in white ink on a pale blue background, and are unreadable!

Whenever I open a file or a window, the text next to the Firefox thing in the top left-hand corner is not readable, unless the window is against a dark background on my desktop. I want to change the lettering of the title of the window to black, but don't know how to do this. Under options, there is no "tools" there, which I think is where I can make this change, so I don't know where to go.

You will not find anything under Tools to help you but "Alt" would show you the menu bar and from there you can click on the "Tools" menu.

The problem that you have is with with Aero transparency. The toolbar you are having a problem with is the title bar which is shared with the tabs bar so you have two things that were messed up by a lack of understanding of what users have chosen or want. You will not see these problems within Internet Explorer whether transparency is on or off.

See https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/904326

  1. turn off transparency in Vista
  2. highly recommend (under View > Toolbars)
    1. Displaying the menu bar (instead of "Firefox button"), previously if you chose to not display menu bar, you still had had title bar and no extra baggage.
    2. Don't checkmark Tabs on Top which makes a lot of things fail including your problem of not being able to read it.

You can make Firefox 8.0.1 look like Firefox 3.6.*, see numbered items 1-10 in the following topic Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 thru 9.0, look like 3.6). Whether or not you make changes, you should be aware of what has changed and what you have to do to use changed or missing features.

There is a lot more beyond those first 10 steps listed, if you want to make Firefox more functional.

Please mark "Solved" one answer that will best help others with a similar problem -- hope this was it.
