Tabs opening when clicking a link or search

This problem just started today....if I search for something, firefox is opening a new tab rather than searching from the open tab. Also, when clicking through a link, firefox is displaying the linked page or result in a new tab. I don't want all these tabs opening up...very obnoxious for my preferences.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

You may also have prefs with the wrong value.
