Why is there extra space above google search results?
When I do a google search, an excessive amount of white space appears above the search results, requiring me to scroll down the page to see even the first choice. Only started happening today.

following cor-el answer will lead you only to find that Autopager is the cause of this.
i've seen it on 2 different pc, with 2 different solutions! Long story short (note that between each test i restarted firefox) i believe that the problem is in the "standard" rule for google, the one from Wind Li.
My advice is to use the full version of Autopager, right click on the AP icon > uncheck "active", then googlesearch for something and create your own rule (you'll probably have to create your rule "blind" since it's possible that the blue test button won't work). After that restore the "active" status and the problem should be fixed. That did the trick on a desktop W7/firefox 3.6.18/AP 0.7.1.0
Before that on a laptop WinXP/firefox 3.6.18/AP 0.7.1.4 i used "autofix", than "check page information" and said Yes to use a rule (jeau i think) but it started working only after i unchecked the "discover matched rules online". dunno why.
In both cases i stopped using the standard rule, so that's why i think the problem is there.
No need to delete cookies or clean cache or use standard theme or close already open tabs.
Hope that helps!

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
- Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
- Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
- Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

It's autopager. Don't do all the stuff above.
