different versions of firefox for different users
I upgraded to firefox 17.0.3 from 10.0.1 as root. Now, when I start firefox as root, it runs v.17.0.3, but my normal user accounts run v.10.0.1. I am not using profiles and can find only one version of the binary on my system (/usr/bin/firefox & /usr/lib/firefox/firefox) under all accounts I did a reset of my profiles, and even deleted the whole .mozilla directory under home dir, but still no luck

Your post was apparently written from Firefox10, or at least using a Firefox10 User Agent String. Possibly you are using fx17 and something is modifying the UAS.
Have you checked all directories ?
including /opt
/etc
and the hidden ~/.mozilla
Presumably you are using Firefox ESR, which is usually an indicator of corporate use, or an educational institution. You may have an IT department able to offer advice.
If you have more than one account then you have more than one profile. Each user account will have normally have a separate profile.
A quick method of finding profile locations is to open Firefox use Troubleshooting and the open folder option, or whatever it says.
May I ask why is it you appear to be using ESR ? & do you have an IT department that can help you ?
I posted the original fault from my user account, that's why the User Agent String showed v.10.0.1 - that was my problem, even after deleting all profiles (.mozilla/*) I finally sorted out the issue by uninstalling firefox, searching for anything that says firefox or mozilla and deleting it, restarting and reinstalling ff, so workaround... but at least all users can now work.
BTW: I'm running ESR because that is the easiest to install (only version that installs via yum on Centos) and haven't had the time or energy to make another working copy
It seems you have it sorted out now then.
I mentioned earlier that with Firefox running it is easy to find the profile
Also note that if you find the Firerfox files, the file profile.ini is the file that tracks the profiles that are in use, but that file itself is in the local profile path. In fact deleting the profiles.ini file forces Firefox to create and use a new profile.
