For the last three weeks or so, when I try to start Firefox (v26.0) it crashes and the Crash Reporter is displayed

Clicking to start Firefox again just displays the Crash Reporter again

I have tried:-

1. resetting firefox (using the reset option in troubleshooting) 2. uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox (including removing setting information) 3. disabling hardware acceleration 4. disabling all extensions and add-ins 5. creating a new profile

but it is still the same

I have also tried starting Firefox in safe mode. Sometimes when I hold down the shift key and start Firefox, the crash reporter appears and sometimes I can start Firefox in safe mode

the latest crash report is at

https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/ea4a22dc-da4a-4b18-95f0-c305a2131223

I don't know what else to try.

Any suggestions appreciated as I don't want to have to abandon using Firefox (as I love it)

thanks

Unfortunately your crash report did not contain clues that helped me.

Two things you may not yet have tried, that could well help

  1. Start in Windows own Safe mode. That may help as it will for instance isolate any plugins. Up to Windows 8 that used the F8 key when booting.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7
  2. Try a Clean Install involving deleting program files (but do NOT delete profile files)
    Troubleshoot and diagnose Firefox problems_5-reinstall-firefox

EDIT, for forum cross referencing purposes

  • Crash Reports for your crash IDs

    (results not found on others)
  • Crash Signature: nsTArray_base<nsTArrayInfallibleAllocator, nsTArray_CopyElements<nsRefPtr<nsXULPrototypeDocument> > >::IncrementLength(unsigned int) | nsHttpHandlerConstructor </li>
  • No bug reports mentioned. OP mentions
Microsoft Safety Scanner and it found a Trojan called Win32/Gatak.DL

Maybe some more crash Id's will help.

  1. Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
  2. In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
  3. From that explorer window, double-click on the Mozilla folder, then double-click on Firefox and then on Crash reports. Double-click on submitted.
  4. Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to View > Arrange Icons by > Modified to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
  5. Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
  6. Paste each ID with bp- into the reply window on the forums.

Thanks in advance!

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Hi Fred thanks for the suggestions

I ran a scan with the Microsoft Safety Scanner and it found a Trojan called Win32/Gatak.DL

I removed it and at the moment Firefox is loading without the Crash Reporter being displayed :)

I will monitor it over the next few days to see if the problem is resolved

many thanks

Good news. But don't stop with just one scan, or just one program. Run several scans using two or more scanners just to be safe. And ever so often, scan you system again, say, every month give or take. Happy Computing. And Merry Holidays.
