I was using Firefox on this computer for 10 months at least and today it doesn't want to launch anymore. I restarted my computer, uninstalled Firefox etc and it still doesn't work. I tried lauching it by the WindowsKey + R (firefox.exe / firefox.exe -safe-mode etc...) and nothing happens. When I click on the icon, i see it on the task manager and it immediatly disapears. I went on the Mozilla folder and found "firefox.exe", right click then "solve compatibility problems" or something like this (I have W7 in French). Then I click on "Try recommended parameters" and it proposes to "start the program" and it is only there where a window pops asking me if I want to let the program change the computer. I accept and Firefox starts, with all functionalities. However I can still click as many times as I want on the Firefox icon, nothing will start. I used "reset Firefox" and it didn't work. I can't change my profile because I can't access nor open the Profile manager.

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Thank you for your reply cor-el but unfortunately, it didn't worked, I followed every steps but nothing happened.

But, I succeed in making it work again (at least for the moment) : I right clicked on firefox.exe (in his folder) and choose "solve compatility problems", I used the option "Windows XP (pack 2)" and I could start the program. But everytime, Windows asked me if I wanted to allow Firefox to change things on my computer. So I right clicked on firefox.exe again, chosed "properties" and clicked on the tab "Compatibility", I swapped to "Windows 7" instead of "Windows XP (pack 2)" and now when I click on Firefox's icon, everything seems working right (without Windows asking for an autorisation).

I hope this could help other people too.

Tom,

Firefox shouldn't need to be ran under compatiblity mode, especially under XP.

More than likely, it's an addon that restricting this.
You can either continue using Firefox under compatiblity mode or you can start Firefox in Safe Mode to figure out what's causing the problem. If Firefox opens in Safe Mode, then it's an extension/plugin. See Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to learn how to troubleshoot your extensions.
Start Safe Mode by doing the following:

  • Hold the SHIFT key while double clicking the Firefox icon.
