It is very inconvenient for me to maintain more than one address directory. By default Thunderbird seems to create two, and I waste a lot of time moving addresses from one to the other. How can I delete one of them?

You can't remove Personal Address Book or Collected Addresses, but if you want to disable the collection of outgoing addresses or have them saved in Personal Address Book, the setting is under Tools/Options/Composition/Addressing.
