An exchange account has been created on a private server for my use. How do I access it with thunderbird? I tried using the tools->account settings->account actions->add mail account path but it doesn't allow me to indicate that it is an exchange account, not an imap or pop3 account.

I suspect Thunderbird can't connect to an Exchange Server using Microsoft's protocols. I assume there are patent-related reasons that the capability isn't built in.

Some Exchange servers are configured to allow IMAP access, but if you weren't provided IMAP details, then perhaps that isn't available for you.

An add-on is available with a license cost of $10/year (first 60 days free): https://addons.mozilla.org/thunderbird/addon/exquilla-exchange-web-services/

Or you could use the Mail app on Windows 8.1, although it does seem a bit simplistic compared with a traditional email client.
