I followed the instructions for mannually creating the incoming/outgoing servers for my AVG Email Scanner. Now it seems messages are not being received. The icon indicating that there is an incoming message continues to pulsate but no message appears and I am no longer receiving the AVG message that it is unable to scan incoming messages.

I would suggest you simply remove the AVG setup and revert to what worked. Email scanning is grossly over rated.

But do check the option

Tools menu > options > Security > anti virus as that c causes a temp file to be written before new mail is added to Thunderbird. AVG will scan the temp file and find or not find any virus without all the elaborate rot they carry on with because their product is not up to the task.
