With Windows XP, SP3, Thunderbird 31.5.0 crashes every time I try to open it.
Problem just started on 3/13. Every time I try to open Thunderbird, I hear a pop or buzz, then everything freezes. I cannot even do cntl-alt-del to get the task manager. I have to reboot. I did allow Microsoft to install a malware fix file the day before. I tried downloading another copy of Thunderbird and installing it, but had the same problem. The new install does not even show up in the list of applications to change/remove in the Control Panel.

New install of what? It sounds to me like you have a Microsoft security fix to remove.
The security fix update is automatic. How do I know which fix to remove? I have never removed a security fix before.
