Iwith prior programs, I was able to search "trash" which maintained a list of all prior emails until I deleted them permanently. I cannot find equivalent capacity on Thunderbird which only reports on content of emails, not sources or persons sending.

have you tried using the quick filter... it is on the toolbar. It searches the currently selected folder.

the only option I see on tool selection is filter. I put in a name there and it says "no results"

I'm always amazed that people put things in Trash and expect them to remain there indefinitely.

Whatever you set in Thunderbird, if the account uses IMAP you need to bear in kind that your email provider may have a retention policy that periodically clears the Trash, or removes messages over a certain age.

If you want to keep it, file it properly. Trash is unreliable.

As far as I am aware, Thunderbird treats the Trash/Bin/Deleted folders the same as any other in regard to searching. I can't think why it would refuse to search on names. The QuickFilter even offers selection boxes for you to set the search context.
