I've had a consistent problem with sustained mouse wheel scrolling using Firefox. After starting my computer (Win 7 Pro) mouse wheel scrolling functions as expected until suddenly, it stops -- only when scrolling a page on Firefox. Wheel scrolling will still work when I switch to a Microsoft app, but not if I switch back to Firefox. The only thing that appears to fix this is to re-boot the OS. Perplexing!

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window
