It seems that compacting can cause a lot of problems. Is there an alternative way to work around this so that the space can still be freed up?

What problem(s) are you experiencing related to compacting? And how do you know when it is compacting?

more options

Wayne, This doesn't answer the question. After reading the posts from other individuals I'm reluctant to even try compacting, therefore my question, which you did not answer, "Is there an alternative way to work around this so that the space can still be freed up? ".

The answer to your question is, no, there is no alternative.

So we're back to my questions. :)

more options

I have been reading in the forum about problems that people have had after compacting. I don't want to risk having issues/creating problems because of having had performed a compacting operation.

So you are saying is no, you haven't had any problems? Or no, you haven't tried it?

more options

Have not tried it, because I don't want to risk the potential problems.

Thanks for the reply. I hope you have the information you need.

more options

No. The information did not help. Since you say that there is isn't an alternative to compacting, what happens if I don't ever compact?

more options

don't ever compact and eventually your disk may fill or performance suffers - depends on your usage and your computer system.

The prompt is offered for historical reasons - partly as a courtesy, partly because there have been more problems in the distant past - not so that users can forever decline to compact. Today, it really should just be automatic with no prompt offered.
